A CAL is short for a Crochet-Along. A pattern is posted by the designer in several parts. Everyone who joins the CAL then works on the pattern using their own choice of yarn or thread colors. As the pattern progresses, pictures are posted by the participants. The fun part is seeing what colors everyone uses for their project.
